Tesla has acquired a new warehouse location in Marysville, Washington, but has not yet disclosed its intended purpose.
Since its inception, Tesla has rushed to increase production. Beginning with its Fremont, California facility, the automaker now assembles vehicles in three countries, with numerous others in the works. Now, Tesla has purchased a new property in the United States, expanding its presence in its native market.
The newly constructed warehouse was identified as Tesla’s after an announcement from the construction company and property owner, as reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
Tesla has not yet confirmed these claims. The newly leased facility is the first of many that will comprise a vast new 5,100,000-square-foot manufacturing center on the West Coast of Washington State.
The concept of a small component supplying facility joining Tesla’s production fleet in the United States is consistent with the company’s business model, particularly as it seeks to expand battery manufacturing in North America to maintain EV incentives.
Possible uses of the new facility vary in plausibility and practicability.
Existing hypotheses regarding the potential uses of the new facility vary in terms of plausibility and practicability. Some have speculated that the new warehouse could be used to store vehicle components or finished vehicles. However, given the distance from the nearest Tesla production facility, it would be impractical to do so.
Others have speculated that the new facility could operate in tandem with a future Canadian gigafactory, but given Tesla’s focus on Quebec and Ontario on the opposite side of the continent, this seems equally unlikely.
This new warehouse joins an expanding portfolio of Tesla properties in the United States that have not yet been retrofitted for their intended use. Other facilities include a 600,000-square-foot location near St. Louis and a 400,000-square-foot location in Houston.
