The enhancements are part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN), a joint initiative between mobile network operators and the UK Government to extend 4G connectivity to 95 percent of the United Kingdom’s geography by 2025’s end
According to the statement, EE, which signed the SRN agreement in March 2020, has now delivered more than 3,000 square miles of additional 4G connectivity to rural areas in each of the four UK nations, an area larger than the Isle of Man.
EE’s 4G network covers over 99 percent of the population.
Covering more than 99 percent of the population, the company’s 4G network is the largest and quickest in the United Kingdom. The most recent expansion of its 4G coverage will reduce ‘partial not spots’ and provide enhanced high-speed mobile connectivity to customers and businesses in remote areas across the country.
4G with high bandwidth in the Highlands
The 1,500th site upgrade, which strengthens EE’s 4G coverage around Loch Ness in Scotland and adjacent villages along the River Moriston, is the largest SRN upgrade delivered by EE to date. The improved connectivity will benefit local residents and businesses, as well as those working and visiting the area, including the tens of thousands of tourists who visit Loch Ness annually in pursuit of its infamous monster “Nessie.”
Rural Data Usage
EE customers in rural areas have been able to acquire more than 30TB of data thanks to the SRN 4G upgrades. Tumble, Carmarthenshire, Wales, and Mount, Warleggan, Cornwall, are two of the most data-hungry communities. Voice calls also make it possible for customers to remain in touch with friends, family, and local businesses.
EE is the first mobile operator to construct or upgrade 1,500 remote sites in the United Kingdom as part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative.
